Frequently asked questions

How does a day go, and how many dives can I do?

The club runs four departures a day, seven days a week, at 8 am, 10 am, 2 pm and 4 pm. Each diver can do up to three dives a day, as the regulations require, with a surface interval at the club between two trips.

What is a themed dive?

The theme of each departure follows the tide and the moon. On an incoming current, we go to meet the dolphins and the reef life; on an outgoing current, we dive in front of the wall of grey sharks and the big predators; at 4 pm, the sunset dive. Themes change from one day to the next: there is no fixed schedule.

Can I dive at sunset, or at night?

Yes. The 4 pm departure is the sunset dive: it is when night-time activity begins and many species start spawning on the reef. Night dives are available on request, for level 2 divers with at least 50 logged dives.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

No. Full equipment is provided and included in every dive. You are of course welcome to bring your own; the club does not rent out equipment separately.

Are there any dangers underwater in Rangiroa?

There are no sea snakes in French Polynesia, and the most venomous fish are stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) and some species of scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae family). Some cone shells can be very dangerous to humans, but only if you pick them up in your hand. As for sharks, remember that you scare them far more than they scare you. The best way to protect yourself is to touch nothing underwater: by simply observing, you protect the marine environment, and you protect yourself.

How many boats does the club have?

The club has four boats, which allows it to run the four daily departures and to head for the pass or site that best suits each group.
