The Tiputa pass

The pass of the dolphins, the grey sharks and the great drift dives.

The dolphin pass

A community of bottlenose dolphins lives in the Tiputa pass all year round and often crosses paths with the dive groups. The encounter is never provoked or guaranteed, and it always respects the regulations.

Depending on the current, we dive in the pass, carried all the way into the lagoon, or on the ocean drop-off, sheltered from the current.

The dive sites

The Sharks' Cavern

Incoming current · all levels, good buoyancy required

A hollow at around 35 metres, at the corner where the pass meets the ocean: divers settle there so that the grey sharks come close, then the current carries the dive group into the lagoon.

The Canyons

Incoming current · experienced divers

We stop in each of the canyons that run across the pass, right in the current: grey sharks gather there, sometimes in their hundreds.

The Step

Incoming current · very experienced divers

The dive starts in open water, in the middle of the mouth of the pass: squadrons of spotted eagle rays and, in season, great hammerhead sharks.

The Crossing

Incoming current · very experienced divers

We cross the pass from one corner to the other, staying deep: the best place to see schools of grey sharks.

The Windmill

Outgoing current · all levels, down to about 25 metres

Along the ocean drop-off, with the reef on the left and the blue on the right: dolphins, manta rays, spotted eagle rays, tuna, humphead wrasses and turtles.

The Half-Windmill

Outgoing current · all levels

The same start as the Windmill, then we follow the reef into the pass and its small caves, between the counter-currents.

The Blue

Outgoing current · in open water

A few hundred metres from the drop-off, above the deep blue: an encounter with silvertip sharks and, with a little luck, silky sharks.

The Angle

Outgoing current · all levels

At the corner of the pass, a breathtaking overview and often a large school of barracudas; deeper down, for experienced divers, manta rays, grey sharks and rays.
