Understanding the current

Incoming or outgoing: why the site is chosen in the morning.

Incoming or outgoing

On an incoming current, clear ocean water flows into the lagoon: visibility is excellent, and it is the time for dolphins and reef life. On an outgoing current, the dive is more demanding: it is the time for the wall of grey sharks and the big predators.

The site is chosen in the morning

The site is chosen that same morning, depending on the direction and strength of the current. A skipper stays on board throughout the dive and picks up the group wherever it surfaces. The dive themes follow the tide and the moon.

Frequently asked questions

Is there current, and how does a drift dive work?

Yes, it is Rangiroa's signature: in the passes, lagoon and ocean water exchange with the tides. You let the current carry you along the pass: that is drift diving.

What do you see on an incoming current?

The incoming current brings in clear ocean water: visibility is excellent, and it is the time for dolphins and reef life.

What do you see on an outgoing current?

The dive is more physical, and it is the time for the wall of grey sharks and the big predators.

When is the dive site chosen?

On the morning itself, depending on the direction and strength of the current and the day's conditions: this is what allows us to offer each group the best dive.

What happens when you surface?

A boat driver stays on board for the whole dive: they follow the group and pick it up wherever it surfaces.
